As the days go by and the drama in Emmerdale continues to unfold, Belle Dingle can't help but feel like the walls are closing in on her. After bravely exposing Tom King's abusive and manipulative behavior to her family and the police, she knows that she's not safe as long as he remains in the village.
Despite Tom's claims of moving on and starting a new relationship with Amelia Spencer, Belle is certain that it's all just a facade and he will use Amelia to get to her. And unfortunately, her suspicions are proven to be true as Tom finds a new way to mess with her head.
James Chase, who plays Tom, revealed to us that in upcoming episodes, Tom intentionally takes one of Belle's belongings - a pale blue jumper - and gives it to Amelia. When Belle sees Amelia wearing her top, she demands to know how she got it. But to Amelia, who believes it was a gift from Tom, Belle's reaction seems unhinged. Even Leyla Harding, who witnesses the confrontation, thinks Belle is overreacting.
But as James explained, this is all part of Tom's plan. "He knows he's grinding her down when he knows she's seen Amelia in her clothes," he said. "He always has a plan, trying to scare Belle, manipulating those he can. He's got something up his sleeve because he has to if he wants to get out of this situation on top. It's all about getting her in the worst state possible so he can selfishly benefit."
Despite Tom's current isolation and lack of allies in the village, James points out that this is when he's at his most dangerous. "I think in a weird way Tom does thrive under pressure as he is used to being in the corner," he said. "It's like he is a trapped animal in the corner trying to fight his way out. I think in a weird way he enjoys it - as he gets an energy from it and feels quite invigorated and proud of himself when he does succeed in talking himself out of these scenarios."
But even with his cunning and manipulative ways, Tom can't escape the growing pressure and doubts in the back of his mind. "There is definitely a small portion of doubt in the back of his mind, because the walls are starting to close in on him," James revealed.
As Amelia starts to question whether the blue top truly belonged to Belle, Tom's plan backfires and he becomes angry and defensive. When Jimmy, who was once Tom's ally, witnesses his behavior towards Amelia and the police arrive with new evidence, it seems like Tom's reign of terror may finally be coming to an end. But even in this desperate situation, Tom refuses to admit defeat, as James describes his character as having a "God complex."
"He thinks he can get away with it as he has a sort of God complex," James said. "He thinks he's incredibly intelligent. He enjoys playing people and playing scenarios. Tom is going to always think he can outwit people - I don't think it's anything he would ever lose, as he's done it time and time again. But I think one day he will get a rude awakening and that will knock his confidence."
