On September 20, a shocking incident occurred in Prem Nagar Colony of Loni, Bihar. Class 5 students of a government primary school fell ill after allegedly consuming mid-day meal. The children were immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre, and 22 out of the 25 children were discharged while three were referred to the combined government hospital in Sanjay Nagar, Ghaziabad.
District Magistrate R K Singh stated that the three children are currently undergoing treatment and the school principal, Usha, has been sent a show-cause notice. On receiving the news, parents of the children reached the school and accused the school principal of serving adulterated milk and cooking rice pulao using substandard condiments. Sub-divisional magistrate, along with police officials, was called to the school. The food department team took samples of milk and rice pulao to be tested in the food testing laboratory.
The principal defended her actions, saying that only Class 5 students suffered from stomach ache and vomiting while the students of other classes had consumed the same mid-day meal.
This unfortunate incident came soon after another incident in Sitamarhi, where 50 students had fallen ill after consuming mid-day meal containing a dead lizard. Such negligence cannot be tolerated and strict action must be taken against those responsible. The authorities must ensure that the food served to children is safe and hygienic.
