Former police officer Kim Potter is expected to be released from prison Monday, according to Fox 9 News. Potter, who was convicted of second-degree manslaughter in the death of Daunte Wright, will reportedly be released from Shakopee Minnesota Correctional Facility after serving 16 months. The death of Daunte Wright occurred in 2021, when he was pulled over for alleged traffic violations, including expired registration tags, in a Minneapolis suburb. Potter, who was attempting to detain Wright, mistakenly fired her handgun instead of her Taser. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.
In light of the chaotic situation and Potter's lack of malicious intent, the sentencing judge, Regina Chu, reduced Potter's sentence to two years and stated “Officer Potter made a mistake that ended tragically. She never intended to hurt anyone. Her conduct cries out for a sentence significantly below the guidelines.”
Though the conviction was obtained, Katie Wright, Daunte Wright's mother, expressed disappointment in the outcome of the case, saying “Kim Potter murdered my son and … today the justice system murdered him all over again.” Wright's father added, “They were so tied up in her feelings that they forgot about my son being killed.”
Potter will now serve the remaining eight months of her sentence on probation, signifying a positive change in the outcome of the case.
