Xbox offers response to Sony's issues with physical media by introducing disc-to-digital option.

Microsoft recently announced an exciting new initiative that aims to enhance the value of your physical Xbox games. As part of their 25th anniversary celebration, they have also confirmed the price of their highly anticipated Xbox Series X. Sony's recent decision to discontinue the production of PlayStation game discs by 2027 has caused quite a stir among players.

Many have taken to petitions and protests to express their disappointment. While Microsoft has also faced its own challenges, such as layoffs and uncertainty surrounding their next generation console, they have managed to gain some positive points with their new disc-to-digital feature. This feature was previously rumored and has now been officially confirmed in an Xbox Wire blog post.

According to the blog post, this feature will allow you to claim a "digital entitlement" by simply inserting your Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc-based game into either console. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can enjoy the benefits of digital gaming, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming (where supported), while still being able to use your physical disc as usual. However, the wording in the blog post has left some questions unanswered.

It's not clear if you can play games with a digital entitlement without the disc or if you can claim the entitlement multiple times using the same disc. In addition to this new feature, Microsoft has also expressed their commitment to game preservation. They aim to make it easier for players to move forward with their Xbox game libraries.

Starting next week, Xbox Insiders will have the opportunity to unlock a digital entitlement for thousands of supported physical games. And more titles will be added over time. While there may be some uncertainties surrounding the functionality of this feature, it is definitely a welcomed addition that adds value to physical games.

It's interesting to see this coming from Xbox, considering they currently have the least physical game sales due to their popular Xbox Game Pass. They also attempted to go digital-only with the Xbox One, long before Sony's recent decision. On a different note, Microsoft has also revealed the price of their limited edition "pee green" Xbox Series X25 console.

Priced at $899.99 in the US, it comes with a copy of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Pre-orders will open globally on Thursday, with a release date set for November 13, 2026. The console is also set to launch in the UK, with a price yet to be confirmed but the limited edition controller will cost £74.99.
