Waterloo Road returns with a dramatic first episode, featuring a character's unexpected death.
Guess what, Waterloo Road is back! It's a new term, with a new school, new pupils, new teachers, and of course, new drama. But there was also one heartbreaking event – the death of a beloved character.

Last night's episode picked up where we left off in the previous series. Headmistress Kim Campbell was offered a new role as director of the Lowry Academy Group, as the school transitions to new facilities. This meant she had to leave her position and her on-again, off-again partner, Andrew Treneman, behind. But, as we found out, they had secretly gotten married off-screen. About time, right?

With Kim's departure, her shoes had to be filled. The interim headmistress was none other than bumbling deputy head Joe Casey, who awkwardly tried to fill Kim's power blazer and heels. We also met some new characters, including comedian Jason Manford, who plays Joe's mentor Steve Savage. It turns out Steve has some history with the school's kitchen manager, Nicky Walters, who avoided him in the car park before visiting her mother in the hospital.

Her mother, Barbara, was concerned about her high blood pressure and gave Nicky some advice about holding onto love when it comes along. Meanwhile, troublesome student Schuey Weever worried about his future with his sister Portia after they were separated in the care system. In the canteen, a fight broke out between his cousin Dean and Libby Guthrie, who accused him of trolling her online. Libby's dad, history teacher Neil, had to intervene and ended up getting suspended by Joe.

The news of Neil's suspension caused a mutiny among the staff, who walked out in protest. Joe had already rubbed them the wrong way by replacing the staff room with computer resources. As they drowned their sorrows in the pub, Steve arrived and informed them that he would be taking over as acting head. Waterloo Road certainly made quite an impression on him, especially after he had to comfort a grieving Nicky.

Speaking of Nicky, she received some heartbreaking news from the hospital. Her mother had suffered a stroke and passed away. Luckily, Steve was there to offer her a shoulder to cry on before her ex-husband Donte showed up. Will their old flame reignite?

The hospital had called to inform Nicky of her mother's passing, and she was devastated. But with Steve's support, she was able to find some comfort. Could this bring her and Donte closer together once again?
