The highly-anticipated reboot of the 1993 action thriller, Cliffhanger, has made some surprising casting changes. Fans were initially expecting to see Sylvester Stallone, the 78-year-old action legend, reprise his role as Ranger Gabriel 'Gabe' Walker, but it has been confirmed that Lily James, known for her roles in Mamma Mia! and Downton Abbey, will now lead the movie alongside former James Bond star, Pierce Brosnan.
The rest of the cast includes Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba, and Bruno Gouery. The film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, taking over from Ric Roman Waugh.
The plot follows seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, played by Brosnan, and his daughter Naomi, played by James, who run a mountain chalet in the Italian Dolomites. During a weekend trip with a billionaire's son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Naomi, still recovering from a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and manages to escape.
The first pictures from the movie have been shared, showing Lily in action as she undergoes intense training to learn how to climb for the role. Filming is currently taking place in Austria, Germany, and Italy, and Collet-Serra has expressed the importance of shooting on location to capture the scope and scale of the story.
The original Cliffhanger was a box office success, grossing $255 million with a $70 million budget. It was also nominated for three Oscars, but lost out to Jurassic Park. The film was based on a concept by climber John Long and followed Gabe, a mountain climber who gets caught up in a heist.
