Underground Atlanta is home to Georgia's first Afrofuturism studio, celebrating Black culture & creativity.
An exciting new exhibit is coming to Underground Atlanta! Subsume Studios, a creative space dedicated to Afrofuturism, was soft-launched over Labor Day weekend by tech entrepreneur Dedren Snead. His vision is to use the revitalized tourist attraction to promote art, culture, and technological advancement within the city.

Dubbed "the world's first Afrofuturism lab," Snead hopes to use Subsume Studios to build "a template for the solutions of tomorrow". He plans to open the space by February of next year and has set a target demographic of young people of color, specifically Black people, in order to uplift their unique talent and imagination.

"We're looking at a way and a space that Black stories and experiences are portrayed — past, present, and future. Such as AI machine learning. Looking at how that can portray into making sure that Black stories exist in all mediums. And so what we're looking at is building data science, building engineers, but also building a creative class of Atlanta to be a part of the narratives of tomorrow," Snead explained to Atlanta News First.

To make the project a reality, Snead plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign at the top of October. He hopes to receive donations from both the public and businesses that will help cover the costs of building development and equipment. The space is meant to be used by people within and beyond the academic sphere, with the common goal of furthering society in an equitable capacity.

"The idea is that understanding needs to be accessible to everyone, and living in a city such as Atlanta that has all of this technology, all of this culture, and all of this experience, why do we not have a space where the community can come together and galvanize those experiences to change the future for us all," said Snead.

Subsume Studios is an ambitious endeavor with the potential to revolutionize how people of color are portrayed in art, technology, and beyond. Keep an eye out for the crowdfunding campaign next month and stay tuned for the official opening of Subsume Studios in February 2021!
