Two people have been given a death sentence for their involvement in a triple murder in Odisha's Angul district.
In a tragic turn of events, a local court in the Athamallik area of Angul district in Odisha has sentenced two individuals to death for their involvement in a triple murder case that shook the community back in 2017. The convicted individuals, Prakash Behera and Nandakishore Sethi, hail from Gambharimaliha and were identified as the perpetrators of the gruesome crime in which three innocent lives were taken.

According to sources, the victims and the convicts were all from the same village. It was revealed that Biranchi Nayak, one of the deceased, had borrowed a significant amount of money, Rs 1.63 lakh, from a local women's Self Help Group to invest in his DJ sound and music business. He had even deposited the same amount in his bank account at the local SBI branch. However, this information was not known to the convict duo, who had a plan to snatch the money from Biranchi.

On the night of October 10, 2017, the convicts lured Biranchi out to watch an opera in a nearby village as part of their plan. Once they had him alone, they mercilessly slit his throat at Thakurgada village in the Athalammik block of the district. After killing Biranchi, the convicts went to his house and deceitfully asked for money from his wife, Tarini Nayak, claiming that Biranchi had been in an accident and needed money for treatment. However, the truth was far more sinister.

Asit Ranjan Deo, the Additional Public Prosecutor, revealed that when Biranchi's wife became suspicious and cried out for help, she was also killed by the convicts. To make matters even more horrific, the convicts noticed that Biranchi's young son had witnessed the murder of his mother. They then took the 10-year-old boy on their motorcycle and killed him by slitting his throat, just two kilometers from where Biranchi was killed.

But their bloodlust did not end there. The convicts returned to Biranchi's house and searched for the money, but found nothing. This heinous triple murder sent shockwaves throughout the district, leaving everyone in a state of disbelief and grief.

Based on a complaint filed by Biranchi's younger brother, the police registered an FIR the following day and arrested the accused individuals a few days later. After examining the statements of 41 witnesses and other evidence, the court delivered its verdict on Friday, sentencing the duo to death under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The court also ordered the District Legal Services Authority, Angul to provide Rs 30 lakhs as financial compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.
