In the early hours of this morning, a devastating fire broke out on The Coppice in Coventry, taking the lives of two people. The blaze started at a residence on The Coppice in Stoke Aldermoor and quickly spread to a first-floor flat. The tragedy was discovered after firefighters arrived at the scene at around 4.40am.
According to a spokesperson from West Midlands Police, the two victims were found inside the flat and efforts are currently being made to identify them. "Our officers are working closely with the West Midlands Fire Service, who are diligently investigating the cause of the fire," the spokesperson said.
Upon receiving the emergency call, fire engines from Coventry, Binley, Foleshill, and Canley arrived at the location within four minutes. A spokesperson from the West Midlands Fire Service described the situation as a "severe house fire" that affected the entire property. Despite the bravery of the firefighters who entered the building wearing breathing apparatus, they were unable to save the two residents.
The fire was eventually extinguished at around 5.55am, and a team of three fire investigation officers, along with a specially trained dog, are currently at the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire. The West Midlands Ambulance Service also responded to the emergency, sending an ambulance, a paramedic officer, and their Hazardous Area Response Team.
According to a spokesperson from the ambulance service, the team worked closely with the fire service and the police and were able to identify two patients. "Unfortunately, it became evident that nothing could be done to save them, and they were declared dead at the scene," the spokesperson said.
The investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing, with both the fire service and West Midlands Police working tirelessly to gather any information that may help in determining the cause of the fire.
