Parliament's monsoon session expected to begin on July 20.

The upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament is expected to start on July 20 and last for about three weeks, according to officials who shared the news on Tuesday. However, a final decision has not yet been made by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs. Typically, both the Monsoon and Winter sessions have around 20 meetings and span over four weeks.

However, there have been instances of shorter sessions in the past. This Monsoon session follows the recent victories of the ruling BJP in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry. The ongoing rebellions in the TMC and Shiv Sena parties are also expected to play a significant role in this session.

The demands of 20 TMC and six Shiv Sena MPs to be recognized as separate groups are currently under consideration by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In the Rajya Sabha, the recent swearing-in of newly elected and re-elected MPs has resulted in a further tilt towards the ruling NDA in terms of political numbers. In the previous session, the government faced disappointment when a Constitution amendment bill, which aimed to implement reservation for women in legislatures by 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats, was defeated in the Lower House.

As a result, the government is now working on redrafting the bill, possibly with a provision to uniformly increase the number of Lok Sabha seats in all states by 50%. This population-based increase in seats has been a major concern for parties in the southern region.
