In a heartbreaking turn of events, two farmers lost their lives in separate incidents in Jajpur and Kendrapara districts on Saturday. The first incident took place in Manitappur, a village in Chikana panchayat of Binjharpur block. Maniram Mohanty, a 62-year-old farmer, collapsed and passed away on his farmland. His family shared that he had visited his land earlier that day, only to be met with a devastating sight. His hard-earned paddy, along with the rest of his crops, were submerged in rainwater that had accumulated on his land.
Witnessing this unfortunate sight, Maniram became distressed and attempted to salvage some of his paddy shoots from the water. However, he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital. Tragically, the doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Maniram's livelihood solely relied on farming and he had been cultivating his three acres of land, as well as two more acres as a sharecropper.
Upon hearing of the incident, Tehsildar Kailash Chandra Mahalik assured the family that he would inform the district Collector and take necessary steps to support them in their time of need. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, 74-year-old sharecropper Daitari Jena from Koshida in Khamol panchayat, Derabish, tragically passed away on Saturday. He had previously attempted to end his life on December 18 after facing crop loss due to unseasonal rain.
Daitari was first taken to the District Headquarters Hospital, then later transferred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. This devastating news comes after three other farmer deaths were reported in Ganjam, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur districts in the past three days. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased farmers, and we hope that necessary steps will be taken to support and assist them during this difficult time.
