Tourists warned that people shouldn't stay in the sun for more than 5 mins during Europe's heatwave.
Spending any length of time out in the sun has become almost impossible in popular European holiday destinations. Tracy Byrne, a self-confessed sun worshipper holidaying in Corfu with her family, admits the heatwave gripping the region is 'unbearable'.

At Damia's Hotel on the north of the island, temperatures are soaring to as high as 39°C and Tracy says no one can stay in the sun for more than five minutes. Holidaymakers are either running for the relief of air-conditioning or jumping in the pool to cool off. Even the locals are struggling with the oppressive heat and tell Tracy it's 'horrible'.

Tracy, who has been coming to Greece for 25 years, says it's the hottest weather she's ever seen. Tourists and locals alike are finding it difficult to cope with the heat and Tracy says the people working in the hospitality industry are particularly struggling. 'Can you imagine cooks here in Greece in a kitchen? They're absolutely soaked with sweat.'

The Charon heatwave, following the Cerberus anticyclone, has made Greece one of the hottest countries in Europe. People are forced to seek shade or head indoors to air-conditioned apartments in the crippling temperatures. Many UK families have even cancelled their holidays because of the extreme weather.

Tracy and her family are determined to make the most of their holiday, despite the heat. They plan to take a ferry ride to nearby Albania, hire a car with air conditioning to explore the island, and take advantage of boat trips and pedalo rides.

Scientists have warned that the heatwave is likely a result of global warming and Tracy is worried about the future. 'It's getting really ridiculous. I have some real concerns about the future and what climate change is doing.' Beyond Europe, freak storms, wildfires and heat records have been broken in other parts of the world.

For now, Tracy and her family will try to enjoy their holiday in Corfu, but she admits it will be a challenge. 'It's too much. For most people I think this is probably unbearable.'
