Top baby names for girls in 2023 revealed, signaling a shift in popular name choices.
Australia's most popular baby names for 2023 have just been announced, and there are some new contenders making their way into the top 10. According to analysts at McCrindle Research, parents have mostly stuck with their favorite names, with Oliver remaining the top choice for boys for the 11th year in a row. However, for girls, Isla has reclaimed the number one spot, moving up from its previous bronze medal position in 2022.

While the boys' top 10 names remained the same as the previous year, there were some changes in the rankings as Hudson, Theodore, and Luca became more popular. On the other hand, the girls' top 10 saw some shake-ups, with Harper, Lily, and Hazel knocking out Ella, Grace, and Willow. But it's not just the top 10 names that are seeing changes - outside of the top ranks, there are several names rapidly shooting up the rankings.

In the girls' top 100, Cleo has risen by 44 ranks, followed by Nina and Ada, both jumping 43 and 40 spots, respectively, from their 2022 positions. Meanwhile, in the boys' top 100, Miles has debuted on the list at number 48, climbing 53 ranks from the previous year. The researchers at McCrindle also found that abbreviated names, such as Billy and Ollie, were gaining popularity among young parents, even though the full names William and Oliver still remain in the top 10.

When it comes to choosing a name for their newborn, the researchers found that family names were the biggest influence for new parents, with 30% citing it as a factor. This was followed by baby name websites, culture or religion, friends, social media, and previous top 100 baby names lists. About 8% of parents chose "other," with many revealing that they were inspired by pop culture or music, and 10% specifically citing the Bible as a source of inspiration.

As for the names that have dropped out of the top 100 in 2023, there were five for both boys and girls. Girls' names that said goodbye to the top 100 were Charlie, Jasmine, Claire, Gracie, and Lilly, while boys' names were Ashton, Connor, Vincent, Elias, and Jaxon.
