This is the tale of a family heirloom, a cup passed down through the generations of the Cuttitta family. It's a cherished symbol of their shared history and a reminder of their Italian heritage.
Hamilton & Inches shared the narrative behind the Cuttitta Cup, which Scotland and Italy will contend for tomorrow at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. In 2021, the company was asked to make the trophy which commemorates Massimo Cuttitta's contribution to rugby, having captained Italy and coached Scotland’s scrum. Last year saw the first time the cup was contested in Rome, and now it is a regular feature of the six nations tournament.

"We proposed the most complicated trophy design we have ever created" said the Edinburgh-based business, which has its roots in 1866. "Inspiration was taken from the shape of the Doddie Weir Cup, crafted in our workshops in 2018, and the scrum's physicality guided the rest of the composition", they added. The handles were fashioned by four pairs of hands in the company's workshop, making the trophy "undeniably 'Massimo'".

They went on to say that the body of the cup features images of players coming out of a lantern, a reference to Massimo's expertise in the game, and a rugby ball is engraved with the logos of Scottish Rugby and the Italian Rugby Federation to join the base and body of the cup, which sits on a kicking tee.
