"I can already feel the anxiety creeping in as I know this product is going to fly off the shelves. The struggle to keep it in stock is real. But I guess that's just a testament to how amazing it is. I have yet to come across a Merit product that I don't absolutely love, and their latest release is no exception. Ever since the brand launched four years ago, their effortless yet stylish products have earned a permanent spot in my makeup bag.
Their newest addition, the Retrospect perfume, has not only secured a place in my handbag, but also in the beauty editors' handbags across the country. As someone who has developed a passion for fragrances in recent years, I always make a beeline for the fragrance section in any department store, eager to discover the latest scents. I've also developed a taste for unique scents, steering away from popular ones like Santal 33 from Le Labo or Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris's Baccarat Rouge 540.
I prefer something with a masculine touch, a hint of wood, and a touch of floral without being overly sweet. So you can imagine how apprehensive I was about trying out a fragrance from an online store without being able to smell it beforehand. But boy, was I wrong! I now understand why there was a waitlist of over 10,000 for this fragrance.
Retrospect L'Extrait de Parfum is a rich, complex scent that took over two years and more than 200 attempts to perfect. It's also Merit's first foray into the ever-changing world of trendy scents. Inspired by the intricate scents of the past, Merit collaborated with master perfumer Fanny Bal in Paris to create this masterpiece. The fragrance evolves as you wear it, blending nostalgic vintage notes with a modern twist. Trust me when I say, it's nothing short of divine.
In fact, as soon as I sprayed it, I had to run to one of my housemates to get her opinion. Needless to say, she immediately went to the Merit website to purchase her own bottle. And the best part is, the fragrance features all the notes I love. The top notes consist of bergamot, pear, and aldehydes, while the heart is a blend of jasmine, synthetic rose, rosemary, violet, and orris. The base is a warm and rich combination of vanilla, musk, and moss. It truly hits all the right notes for me - literally!
What sets Retrospect apart is its ability to transcend traditional categories and offer a balanced and nuanced scent. It starts with soft, clean notes, then transitions to a subtle floral heart, and finally settles into a warm, rich base. And here's the cherry on top - as a concentrated l'extrait de parfum with nearly 30% fragrance oil, you only need one spray to last you all day.
It's hard to believe that just two years ago, Merit was solely focused on color cosmetics. But their bold move paid off when they launched the Great Skin Instant Glow Serum, which became an instant hit. And they've continued to expand their line with the recent addition of the Great Skin Priming Moisturizer, which had a waitlist of 15,000 and quickly became one of the top 10 moisturizers at Sephora North America.
Now that the secret is out about this being my fragrance of the year, I might need to stock up. And with such an affordable price for a luxurious scent, it's a no-brainer. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
