Rescuers are looking for survivors of landslides and flooding in Brazil after a huge weekend downpour.
At least 36 people were found dead in the country’s southern state of São Paulo, with the city of Sao Sebastiao worst hit.
A seven-year-old girl was also killed in the neighbouring town of Ubatuba.
Images and videos show dozens of homes totally flooded or covered with rubble from the landslides.
Sao Sebastiao mayor, Felipe Augusto, said over the weekend: ‘Our rescue teams are not managing to get to several locations; it is a chaotic situation.’
He said about 50 houses had collapsed in the city due to the landslides.
It is thought another 40 people are missing across the São Paulo region and some 800 people are now homeless.
The disaster has caused the cancellation of many Brazilian Carnival celebrations, which traditionally marks the start of Lent in the country.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also visited the area to oversee emergency and rescue operations.
Hygiene kits, blankets, sleeping bags, mattresses, fresh water and medical supplies were delivered to Sao Sebastiao.
Water supplies, power and telephone lines were also affected by the disaster.
