The star of Dexter was worried about making mistakes when he took on the iconic role in a new spin-off.
In a recent interview, Patrick Gibson opened up about the intense pressure he felt after landing one of the most iconic roles on TV. He plays the younger version of Dexter Morgan in the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, which airs on Paramount+ and also stars Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Christina Millian, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gibson spoke to Metro ahead of the season one finale and shared his thoughts on stepping into the shoes of such a notorious character and wanting to do justice to everyone involved.

The 29-year-old actor admitted that he felt the pressure from the very beginning, even before he landed the role. He explained, "I was aware of how much people love that character, and also how unique of a character he is. It's not like you're doing another iteration of it, you really are playing the same guy. That was definitely daunting."

Gibson also mentioned that having Clyde Phillips, the original showrunner, and the rest of the OG team involved in the project helped ease the pressure. They had conversations during the audition process about how they were going to approach the character and by the time they started filming, Gibson felt ready to dive in. He added, "If I had thought about the audience, I probably would have been absolutely terrified."

The prequel series takes viewers back to Dexter's early years as a police officer in Miami in 1991. It first aired in December 2024 and has received a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many praising Gibson's performance and how he brings a new dimension to the character. The actor revealed that he was conscious of not trying to imitate Michael C Hall's portrayal of Dexter too much. He said, "I didn't want to set myself up for the challenge of being like, 'I'm going to do 100% Michael C Hall.' What was so endearing about his [portrayal] was that his manner is quite similar to that in real life. He brought a lot of himself to it."

Gibson worked with a dialect coach and watched the show multiple times to master Hall's mannerisms and voice. He also wanted to leave room for his own interpretation of the character and show his growth from the early years to the Dexter we know from the original series. The actor added, "It was fun to see where that hadn't been as refined. It was really just absorbing it, and then letting it go on set, just diving in."

The 10-part series is set to conclude on Valentine's Day and Gibson teased that the finale will be different from any other finale in the Dexter universe. He said, "It goes to places that feel very climactic. For a first season, it really pumps things up in a way that is really exciting. We'll start to see Dexter come into a maturity that we haven't seen throughout the show."

Dexter: Original Sin is available to stream on Paramount+. The finale airs on Valentine's Day and Gibson joked, "A lot of romance. It's perfect to sit down after your date night, just a happy, you know…" He added, "It is different, I think, to any finale episode that we've seen before, honestly. Definitely, at least in the OG show - those first few seasons."
