Tragically, Knox MacEwen, a 14-year-old boy, passed away on Saturday morning while participating in a 5K race at Everglades High School in Florida. His mother, Julie, had just recovered from a difficult battle with cancer in the previous year. Knox was a beloved member of his local community, an active JROTC student at Western High School in Davie, Florida, and a volunteer with the Kids Ministry at his home church, Crossway Church in Cooper City.
When news of Knox's death spread, his community felt a great sense of loss. Pastor Jon Elswick of the church said Knox’s death caused ‘ripple effects’ through the community and that ‘it’s been a really difficult time’. He also expressed that Knox was the best of us, noting that he was a loving, caring and funny kid.
Western High School Principal Jimmy Arrojo expressed his deepest condolences to Knox’s family, classmates and teachers. He asked the Wildcat community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Knox’s family with funeral expenses, and as of Tuesday evening, more than $73,100 had been raised. Knox’s death is currently under investigation. His death follows the previous death of a 14-year-old boy who died of an undetected heart condition while at Saint Kentigern’s Academy in Scotland, just four months prior.
Knox MacEwan will be forever remembered by his community and loved ones.
