Students raised £5,000 for a statue of Long Boi the duck to remember him.
Tributes have been pouring in for Long Boi, the famously tall duck who is presumed dead after not being seen on University of York's campus grounds since mid-March. The mallard Indian runner cross gained a huge social media following due to his unusual 2ft 2ins tall stature.

In a bid to pay respect to one of the university's most famous alumni, students have already crowdfunded an impressive £5,527 to go towards a statue in his honour. Around 340 people have so far donated to the cause, which the University of York Student Union have expressed their ‘great pleasure’ in announcing.

The university is now on the hunt for an artist to design the memorial statue, with plans to issue an Open Call to any artists wishing to design and create the Long Boi memorial in the coming weeks. They have also thanked all 340 of their donors, as well as their ‘Big Donors’ who have each contributed significantly to the success of the fundraiser.

In honour of the bird, fans are also selling a range of merchandise including t-shirts, stickers and notebooks. A bakery in York city centre even sold vegan Long Boi doughnuts amid his disappearance in March. The large duck is believed to have been an unwanted pet that was dumped in the lake near the university.

The giant bird was even mentioned on The Late Late Show with James Corden two years ago and has also received a shoutout on BBC Radio 1. It's clear that Long Boi's memory will live on, and that the statue will be a fitting tribute for such a beloved member of the University of York community.
