Stu Jackson, a former basketball player and head coach, has been selected to join the National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, as announced by the NCAA. This prestigious position was previously held by the West Coast Conference Commissioner, Renee Baumgartner, who recently announced her departure from the school on June 30th for personal reasons. With her term ending, Jackson will fulfill the remaining four years of her tenure.
Expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm, Jackson stated, “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and represent the West Coast Conference. I have deep respect for Renee Baumgartner’s dedication and am humbled to be chosen to complete her term alongside this esteemed group. I eagerly look forward to collaborating with the current committee members and the NCAA staff, under the exceptional leadership of Dan Gavitt, to contribute to the men’s basketball championship and other future initiatives.”
Prior to this appointment, Jackson spent 13 years working for the NBA before joining the NCAA as the executive associate commissioner for men’s basketball for the Big East Conference. He then took on the role of West Coast Conference Commissioner, where he made significant contributions to the conference's success.
Jackson’s passion for basketball began during his collegiate years at Oregon and Seattle University, where he graduated in 1978. His incredible achievements on and off the court have been recognized by the Pac-12 Conference Hall of Honor in 2017 and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
During his time in the NBA, Jackson served as an assistant coach and was later hired as the head coach of the New York Knicks from 1987-1991. He also held the position of director of basketball operations from 1991-1992. In 1994, he became the president and general manager of the expansion team, the Vancouver Grizzlies, and was also a part of the NBA Competition Committee and the boards of USA Basketball, the Basketball Hall of Fame, and the FIBA Technical Commission. Additionally, he worked as a studio and game analyst for NBA TV and FS1 for five seasons.
Jackson’s coaching abilities also extended to the college level, where he served as the head coach at Wisconsin from 1992-1994, leading the Badgers to their first NCAA tournament berth in 47 years. He also held coaching positions at various schools, including Providence, Washington State, and Oregon.
