Earlier this year, British rapper Stormzy found himself in hot water after being caught using his mobile phone while driving. The 31-year-old, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, had previously denied the allegations, but has now pleaded guilty to the charges.
As a result, Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months by the Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court. The incident in question took place on March 7, 2024, when the musician was driving his Rolls-Royce Wraith on Addison Road in west Kensington. An undercover officer noticed Stormzy on his phone and knocked on his tinted passenger window, telling him to get rid of the tints and put his phone away.
During a hearing in September, prosecutor Alice Holloway revealed that an off-duty police officer had witnessed the incident. The officer, who was driving alongside Stormzy, could see him using his phone through the tinted windows. The officer also had footage of the incident, which automatically recorded while he was driving.
This is not the first time Stormzy has been in trouble for driving violations. In October 2023, he pleaded guilty to driving his Lamborghini Urus on Coombe Lane in Kingston upon Thames with illegally tinted windows. While there are no regulations for tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows, there are laws in place to prevent front or front side windows from being too dark.
According to documents, the front two windows of Stormzy's car only let in 4% of light, far below the legal requirement of 70%. This level of darkness can pose a danger to others on the road. Stormzy's legal team has yet to comment on the recent guilty plea.
