Oti Mabuse's husband, Marius Iepure, was taken aback by a recent conversation. Oti revealed that someone at border control had demanded "proof" from Marius to prove that their baby is his child. As many may know, Oti and Marius are both dancers and have been married for ten years. Last Christmas, they made a joyous announcement that they had welcomed their daughter into the world.
Oti shared that her partner, who is originally from Romania, was stunned by the exchange and it made him stop and think about how he approaches certain conversations when it comes to race. During an interview with Hits Radio presenter Fleur East for her Black History Month: Raising The Next Generation special on Rayo, Oti described the incident as "a learning curve."
She explained, "He got asked at border control, 'Show me proof that this is your child.' He's never had to show proof before...it was a learning curve for him." Oti went on to say that they were asked a lot of questions such as, "Where is the mother from? Your baby looks very different," and even commenting on their daughter's hair. She described it as a "microaggression" and said that her husband now understands it better.
For the first time, Marius felt protective over the issue as he witnessed first-hand the impact of microaggressions. Oti continued, "He also has to see what a microaggression is – because before he was like, 'It's just a question' and I went, 'But it's not, is it?'" Oti also had some advice for parents who may find themselves in a similar situation with their own families. She said, "Just remind your baby that you're not just black or white, you're both. That's an important message. You don't have to be either or – it's twice as nice! Why does it have to be one or the other?"
After giving birth to their daughter two months early, Oti and Marius announced her arrival on Christmas Day last year. The couple has not yet revealed their daughter's name publicly. Oti previously shared that they wanted to take some time for themselves after the unexpected and premature birth. She also opened up about the difficulties she faced during the birth, including sepsis and her daughter being born very premature. Seeing her firstborn being placed in an incubator just moments after birth was also tough for Oti.
During an interview on the Parenting Hell podcast with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, Oti shared that she was not aware of the process or what to expect. She also mentioned how it took her a few months to realize the trauma she had gone through. Her daughter spent six weeks in the hospital, and Oti praised the medical staff for their support. She also found comfort in other parents who were going through similar situations.
Oti's interview with Fleur East, Raising the Next Generation, is now available on the free Rayo app. If you have a celebrity story, video, or pictures, reach out to The Agency entertainment team via email, phone, or by visiting their Submit Stuff page. They would love to hear from you.
