Singer Jess Glynne talks about maintaining a successful relationship with former soccer player Alex Scott.
Right now, heat is the name of the game for Jess Glynne. It's no secret that this talented singer from north London, with her fiery red hair, is dominating the airwaves this summer. You've probably heard her hit song "Hold My Hand" beckoning you to plan your next vacation. But there's more to her success than just that.

At 34 years old, Jess has a lot going for her. She has a sizzling new album, JESS, a hot girlfriend in former Lioness Alex Scott, some exciting summer tour dates, and a new single, "Summer's Back". In just 60 seconds, Jess opens up to Metro about her vulnerability, confidence, dealing with loss, and finding balance through hard work.

So, how has your summer been so far?

It's been amazing. The shows have been fantastic and I'm loving having my new album out.

People often associate you with summer. Is it because of a certain holiday advert featuring "Hold My Hand"?

[Laughs] It's quite amusing, really. And now with my new song, "Summer's Back", it's like a reminder to everyone that I'm all about summer.

You're performing at festivals this year...

Yes, I have two more lined up. But I'm already planning for next year, which I'm calling my "festival year". I released my album right before summer, so I like the idea of giving people some time to really sit with my music before they see me perform live.

Your shows have been receiving rave reviews.

I'm so thrilled with how they've turned out. I don't do anything halfway, and I haven't performed in years, so I really went all out for these shows. The world is going through a lot right now, and I just want to give people a chance to escape and have a good time. When I step on stage, I want them to forget everything else and just be in the moment.

Were you a big festival-goer when you were younger?

I actually went to a lot of festivals. I used to work for an alcohol company and started out as a shot girl. They liked to call it "brand experience", but let's be real, it was more fun being the shot girl. But as I moved up to manager, it became more about packing up and late nights, which really turned me off from drinking. I eventually stopped altogether. And as a young woman, it was definitely a vulnerable position to be in, but I had so much fun. I even thought it could be my backup plan if music didn't work out.

Your latest album is amazing, with some powerful songs.

Thank you! I'm glad you think so. For me, it's always been about telling a story through my music. I was just talking to my manager about how much I love this new summer record, and he reminded me that when I was writing it, I was going through a lot. I wasn't in a good place, I had lost a friend, and it was a really emotional time for me. But now, I'm in such a better place, and I think some of these songs are the best I've ever written.

Listening to the album from start to finish, it feels like a complete journey with a lot of emotion. And being back on stage has really sparked my creativity.

After being out of the spotlight for five years, were you just taking it easy?

[Laughs] Not at all! I was actually working really hard. I finished my tour in 2019, then COVID hit, and we were all locked down. I took that time to rest and recharge after working non-stop for seven years. But as soon as things started to open up, I was back in the studio. I even went to America for a while to write. It definitely wasn't a lot of lying in bed.

But I did experience a significant loss during that time, which took a few months out of my life. It was a traumatic experience, and I couldn't even leave the house for a while.

Did you seek help during that time?

Absolutely. Meeting my therapist was the best thing that happened to me. She helped me become a more well-rounded person. It's all about finding those silver linings.

And now, you're back in America, but your girlfriend Alex Scott is in the UK. How do you make the long-distance thing work?

It's definitely not easy, especially with both of us having such busy schedules. But we make it work.

You sound really happy now.

I am. I feel like I've found a good balance in my life. I have a great support system with my family, business, and partner. I'll never forget how desperate I was to get off stage during my last tour. But now, I can't even describe how much I'm loving being up there. I've never felt this level of confidence and security on stage. When you put in the work on yourself, it really makes a difference.
