Sara, a tigress at Nandankanan Zoo, passes away.
Sara, the cherished wild tigress who was a beloved part of the Nandankanan family, passed away on Thursday at the age of 18. It was a sad day for all who knew and loved her as she took her last breath at 4:42am on the premises of Nandankanan Zoological Park. According to sources within the zoo, Sara was 18 years and one month old at the time of her passing.

Sara's journey began when she was just a cub, rescued from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh on October 18, 2006. At that time, she was only five months old and was taken to Van Vihar Zoological Park in Bhopal where she was raised. Eventually, on April 18, 2009, Sara joined Nandankanan Zoological Park as part of an animal exchange program.

She quickly became an important member of the zoo's conservation breeding program, bringing new life to the tiger population. On January 13, 2012, she gave birth to three cubs - Asha, Ankita, and Subhashree - who were sired by the tiger Rishi. However, Asha was later transferred to Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad as part of another animal exchange program.

In the months leading up to her passing, there were signs that Sara's health was declining. On February 29, 2024, she was observed to be dull and struggling to stand, with labored breathing. After receiving treatment and supportive therapy, she was able to stand and even eat meat on March 3, 2024. However, she was confined to a smaller area for feeding due to her condition.

Unfortunately, her health continued to deteriorate and on March 21, 2024, Sara developed decubitus ulcers on her hip joints. Despite ongoing treatment, she gradually became emaciated. Finally, on June 26, 2024, she was found lying on her side with weak breaths. Despite the best efforts of the zoo staff, Sara passed away at 4:42am on Thursday. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and cared for her at Nandankanan Zoological Park.
