The Health Service Executive (HSE) has issued a warning regarding a recent Ryanair flight from London to Dublin, expressing concern that passengers and crew may have been exposed to measles. This comes in the wake of a surge in measles cases in London, with over 74 reported cases in April alone. The increase in infections is not limited to London, as the entire region of Great Britain and Ireland has also seen a rise in cases.
According to the HSE, those who were on board Flight FR123 between Gatwick and Dublin at 8:10pm last Thursday are at risk of contracting the highly contagious disease. The agency is urging travelers to be vigilant for any symptoms of measles for the next 21 days, until June 7. This includes cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and coughing, as well as a temperature above 38°C and a rash that typically appears on the head and neck before spreading to the rest of the body.
The HSE has also identified certain groups who are at a higher risk of developing measles, including children under 12 months old, pregnant individuals, and those who have a weakened immune system. However, the agency notes that those who have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, have had measles in the past, or were born in Ireland before 1978, are likely to be immune.
For those who are not vaccinated or immune, the HSE advises avoiding contact with vulnerable individuals, such as pregnant women, babies under 12 months old, and those with compromised immune systems, until after June 7. Healthcare workers who have been in contact with a measles case are also advised to inform their superiors and take necessary precautions.
In addition, the HSE recommends that those who are not vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine should contact their healthcare provider during normal working hours to discuss the possibility of vaccination. And for anyone who experiences symptoms of measles, the agency urges seeking medical advice and informing the healthcare facility in advance to prevent further spread of the disease.
