Are you following these sleep habits?

Scientists have discovered five essential sleep patterns that could add years to your life – and they're very easy to do.

We all understand that good quality sleep is essential for staying fit mentally and physically.

Researchers have revealed that getting proper sleep can have a measurable impact on life expectancy.

It was found that men and women who reported having all five of these sleep quality measures had an increased life expectancy of 4.7 years and 2.4 years, respectively, compared to those who had none or only one of the five.

So what are these five life-prolonging sleep behaviours?

Sleeping around seven or eight hours a night.

Not having difficulty falling asleep more than twice a week.

Experiencing difficulty staying asleep no more than twice a week.

Not taking any sleep medication.

Feeling well-rested when waking up no less than five days a week.

The researchers want patients and medical practitioners to begin discussing sleep as an important part of overall health assessments.

Study co-author Dr Frank Qian said: ‘If people follow these ideal sleep behaviours, they are likely to live longer.’

Researchers have discovered that following five specific sleep behaviours could add years to your life. It has been noted that people who have all five of these high-quality sleep measures have a greater life expectancy than those who have none or only one. The five sleep qualities that can have a positive effect on life expectancy are: getting seven or eight hours sleep every night, having difficulty falling asleep no more than twice a week, having trouble staying asleep no more than twice a week, not taking any sleep medication and feeling well rested when waking up at least five days a week. The study's co-author, Doctor Frank Qian, has expressed that if people do have all of these ideal sleep behaviours, they are likely to live longer. He also stated that simply getting enough hours of sleep is not enough. The research showed that younger people with these beneficial sleep behaviours are less likely to die prematurely, and around 8% of deaths from any cause could be linked to inadequate sleep patterns. Previous studies have concluded that both not getting enough and getting too much sleep can be damaging to the heart, and sleep apnoea can lead to multiple heart conditions.
