Reader's Feature was disappointed that Spider-Man 2 was not released on PS5 for Christmas.
I recently got a PlayStation 5 for Christmas, and I was really eager to try out both Astro's Playroom and Spider-Man 2. Astro's Playroom was really impressive and showed off the capabilities of the DualSense controller, and I was really impressed by its soundtrack and references. But when I got into Spider-Man 2, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be.

At first glance, the game seemed to have all the makings of a great success. The graphics were beautiful and the moves for both characters were abundant. The combat and stealth were reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham series and were very button-mashing friendly. But the game still felt like it was based on an old game, and it didn't feel like it was pushing the boundaries of the PlayStation 5.

The story was predictable and the dialogue was quite bland. I had no idea of the powers of most of the bad guys, especially Kraven and Mister Negative. The game was quite short and the same goons kept popping up. Perhaps the most disappointing thing was that Spidey rarely ever web-swinged because gliding was so useful, which was a bit of a letdown for a Spider-Man game.

I think my main problem with the game is that it felt strangely old-hat. It was obviously chasing Uncharted's tail a lot, but that's also an old franchise at this point. I think this made me wary of playing Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarök, because I'm worried about running into the same issue again. I think Sony needs to move away from making all these very similar looking games and into live service games.

So my next game will be Returnal, which got good, if not better, reviews and seems to be something different. I think Sony should focus on making games that could not be done on the PlayStation 4, and that's why Astro's Playroom was so impressive. Spider-Man 2 didn't really showcase the capabilities of the PS5, and I hope that the games Sony makes next do.
