Do you think the PlayStation 4 will be enough to satisfy you until the PlayStation 6 comes out? Recently, a reader has made the decision to stick with their trusty PS4 and they're pointing the finger at Sony for their lack of recent announcements, which has convinced them to just wait for the PS6. It's hard to believe, but the PlayStation 5 will be four years old this Christmas and it seems like things are not going well. While it's still easily outselling the Xbox Series X/S, overall console sales are down and Sony has barely announced any new games in the last three years. And to make matters worse, half of those announcements have been for live service games that nobody really wants.
This is quite different from the PlayStation 4, which many consider to be the best console ever made and definitely Sony's greatest in terms of exclusive games. Although there are fewer cross-gen games being released, there are still plenty of new games coming out for the PS4. Personally, I am perfectly content with my PS4 as my main console and I don't feel the need to upgrade just yet.
Normally, by this time in a console's lifespan, I would be thinking about upgrading to the next generation. But nowadays, the whole concept of upgrading makes no sense to me. There are very few games that I am interested in playing on the PS5, the console itself is quite expensive, and there will probably be a PS5 Pro released in just a few months, making the original PS5 outdated. And let's not forget that the PlayStation 6 will likely be released sooner than we think.
There has been a lot of discussion about the console business not growing enough, but no one seems to mention the simple fact that it's just too expensive. Most people can't afford to drop hundreds of dollars on a new console whenever they want, especially during tough times. And with Sony acting strange and barely announcing any new games, it's no wonder that console sales are declining.
We're four years into the PlayStation 5 and all I can think is that I should probably just skip it and wait for the PlayStation 6. Especially since it will be backwards compatible, so I can just catch up on what I've missed. At the moment, the only game I am looking forward to on the PS5 is Spider-Man 2, and I've already played Horizon Forbidden West and God Of War Ragnarök on my PS4.
I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation, which makes me wonder if this is one of the main reasons why PlayStation 5 console sales are falling off quicker than expected. Some people try to downplay the importance of exclusive games, but they really do matter. Not just the games themselves, but the sense that the console maker knows what they're doing. And right now, both Sony and Xbox seem clueless.
I'm not saying that the PS6 will be a disaster, but I hope that by then, Sony will have sorted themselves out and all this live service nonsense will have fallen out of fashion. But until then, I have my sights set on the potential Switch 2. Depending on the price, I would definitely consider getting one, as I have confidence that Nintendo will continue to provide a steady stream of great exclusive games.
For me, that's what I want from a console, and I feel that Sony has lost sight of that this generation. They seem to think that just existing is enough for people to flock to their hardware. But not for me. Not this generation.
