Are you an intrepid traveller looking for a unique experience? Look no further than Gervasutti bivouac, perched on Mont Blanc at an altitude of 2,835 metres. It's a gruelling four-and-a-half hour hike to get there, but it's worth it for the breathtaking views.
Gervasutti bivouac is named after the Italian mountaineer Guisto Gervasutti, who first climbed the east face of the Grandes Jorasses in 1942. This modern-looking cabin can sleep up to 12 people and has beds, a cooking area and even internet access powered by solar panels, plus an amazing window offering incredible views.
The bivouac is free to stay in and self-maintained by guests, so it's a first-come, first-served basis. Franky Morgan, 20, from Guildford, Surrey, UK, recently trekked up the Grandes and Petites Jorasses mountains in Italy with two pals and was amazed by what she found.
Franky said: "It took us about four and a half hours over some sketchy conditions, but we made sure to stop and take in the amazing view during the trip up. When we got up there, the views were crystal clear; it was breathtaking."
Franky suggests crossing the river further down the mountain before attempting the journey, and says the trek down was the hardest part. She advises: "We woke up to a thick cloud of fog and some bad rain, so we waited as long as we could but had to brave going down the mountain in quite treacherous conditions."
Despite the challenging journey, the experience was totally worth it. Franky says: "Once we finished, we said goodbye, and I relaxed in the van for the rest of the day. We made some food and played cards all evening, accompanied by a well-earned glass of wine."
If you're looking for a truly unique experience, Gervasutti bivouac can't be beaten. It's a gruelling journey to get there, but the incredible views and modern facilities make it a trip worth taking.
