Actress Radhika Mehrotra is currently basking in the success of her recent web series, Kaala Paani. As Dr Ritu Gagra, her character has been praised for its sheer brilliance, exhibiting her exceptional acting prowess. Radhika claims that she was born with an innate passion for acting. “My father was a movie buff and since my childhood, he made sure that we were exposed to cinema. It was only during my college days that I discovered the theatre and developed an affinity for it. I decided to pursue this craft and enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York,” she reminisces.
Radhika was shortlisted for the role after a series of auditions with directors Sameer Saxena and Amit Golani. She shares, “At first, I didn’t believe that I had won the role. All thanks to the casting director Vaibhav Vishant. When I called him, he confirmed that it was all happening!”
When asked about how she prepped for the role, Radhika expresses her gratitude for the show’s writer Biswapati Sarkar. “The script was thoroughly researched and I could completely rely on it. Furthermore, I have always been a big fan of medical dramas, so that also proved to be a great help,” she reveals.
The character of Dr Ritu Gagra is a strong-willed young doctor who battles against the odds to save lives. When asked if she relates to any of the traits of her role, she says, “The one thing that I related with Ritu’s character was that she was always focused on what she thought was the most important, regardless of what others felt or thought. That’s pretty much the story of my life.”
Radhika was overwhelmed by the opportunity to work with Mona Singh and Ashutosh Gowariker. She exclaims, “It was an absolute privilege. I’m so happy and grateful that I got to work with them in my debut. Mona has an incredible energy and she’s filled with warmth and love. It’s a lot of fun being around her and she’s an amazing actor. Ashutosh sir is the sweetest, I had a great time shooting with him.”
Radhika reveals that shooting in Andaman and Nicobar Islands was an unforgettable experience and that the unit would go for hikes and scuba diving on their day off. “The locals were so hospitable and made us feel at home. I sincerely hope that it remains the same and everyone gets to see it at least once in their lifetime,” she expresses.
When asked if the show will have a second season, Radhika concludes with a hopeful response, “Fingers crossed.”
