Tracey reveals her story of gambling addiction and how she ultimately chose to turn her life around after becoming overwhelmed with guilt and shame. She had been playing bingo since the age of 18 and then started to gamble online, eventually winning £220,000 in 2011. This led to her spending an immense amount of money and even stealing from her employer, ultimately taking £1.7million in total. When she could no longer cope with the stress and shame, she wrote a letter to her family and was on the verge of ending her life, when her son and granddaughter showed up. She eventually confessed to her husband, was arrested and told to expect eight to ten years in prison, which she was petrified of, but the relief of finally coming clean was immense.

But the judge sentenced me to an 18-month suspended sentence, and I knew then that I had to turn my life around. I started getting help for my gambling addiction and I’m now a mentor for other recovering gamblers. I also speak in schools, churches and prisons.

I’ve recently become a trustee for the charity GamCare, which provides support and advice to those affected by gambling.
