Early Saturday morning, Russia launched its largest strike on Ukraine since the war began. According to military officials, 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones were launched at Kyiv. However, 71 of the drones were destroyed by air defences.
Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city administration, described the attack as "the most massive air attack by drones on Kyiv". Unfortuantely, the assault resulted in five people, including an 11 year old child, being wounded. Additionally, several buildings and a school were damaged.
The attack began at 4am local time and lasted for more than six hours. It caused power outages in 77 residential buildings and 120 institutions, according to Mr Popko. Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk commented on the attack, writing on his Telegram channel that "Kyiv was the main target".
President Volodymyr Zelensky also commented on the attack, writing on Telegram that although most of the drones were shot down, "unfortunately not all". He continued, saying that they are "continuing to work to strengthen our air defence and shoot down more".
It is worth noting that the attack was carried out on Holodomor Memorial Day, which commemorates the man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine that killed millions of Ukrainians from 1932 to 1933. In addition to Kyiv, the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions were also targeted.
