Vladimir Kvachkov, a notorious former Russian spy chief, has made an astonishing attack on Vladimir Putin's handling of the war in Ukraine. On Tuesday, Kvachkov accused Putin, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov of being incapable of waging a war.
Kvachkov made the comments after a Moscow court found him guilty of discrediting the armed forces. He went on to say that those who cannot wage war are the ones who are discrediting the armed forces. He was fined 40,000 roubles for three social media posts which criticised the special military operation in Ukraine and the Russian leadership.
Kvachkov is a former colonel with Russia's foreign military intelligence agency, GRU. He was previously jailed in 2005 for attempting to assassinate politician and businessman Anatoly Chubais, although he was later acquitted three years later. In 2013, he was convicted of creating a terrorist group and plotting to overthrow the government.
After the hearing, Kvachkov told a journalist it was Putin and his team who are 'guilty'. If Kvachkov is found to be discrediting the armed forces for a second time, he will face a jail sentence.
