Hey there, gaming fans! I'm sure you've all been wondering what's taking so long for the next installment of NieR. Well, it turns out that three veterans of the NieR franchise are hard at work on a new game, but they're keeping tight-lipped about whether or not it's truly a NieR game.
It's been over seven years since NieR:Automata took the gaming world by storm, with even the remake of the first game surpassing expectations. You'd think that by now, we'd be swimming in sequels and spin-offs. But apart from a mobile game, there's been nothing. However, there may be hope on the horizon, as NieR producer Yosuke Saito recently revealed that he's collaborating with NieR creator Yoko Taro and composer Keiichi Okabe on a project that "might be NieR, it might not be NieR."
Why all the secrecy? Only Taro and his team know for sure. It's not even clear if they're intentionally teasing a third game or if they themselves aren't sure if it will end up being a NieR title. And to add to the mystery, it doesn't seem like the game is very far along in development, so why is it taking so long? Especially since Square Enix was quick to release the NieR remake.
Saito shared, "I've been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for some time now. I'll have something more to say in the near future, so stay tuned. It might be NieR, it might not be NieR. [Laughs] That's all I can say for now." He also added, "I'm working on various things with the goal of creating something that doesn't exist yet. I can't devote all my time to it, so most of it has been left to the staff. But it's shaping up to be quite interesting. I can't wait for the day we can announce it."
It's definitely reassuring to know that Square Enix is open to a NieR sequel, especially with their recent shift towards multi-platform releases and bigger projects. NieR has always been multi-platform, and with the success of Automata, it's safe to say that the budget for the next game will likely be increased.
As for what the game will entail, Taro hasn't given any hints, but fans can expect a strong female protagonist, given Taro's fondness for the character Stellar Blade.
