According to an official statement, the state of Odisha has witnessed 20 deaths due to sunstroke in the last three days, as the intense heatwave continues to affect the region. The Special Relief Commission of the state has confirmed that out of the 99 reported deaths, 20 were caused by sunstroke after post-mortem and inquiry. Two other deaths were due to different reasons, and the remaining cases are still under investigation.

Prior to this, 42 deaths were suspected to be caused by sunstroke, but only six were confirmed after post-mortem and inquiry, while another six were found to be caused by other reasons. Officials have reported that the majority of these deaths occurred in Bolangir, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sonepur, Sundergarh, and Balasore districts.
