It's hard to believe, but the 90s pop group A*Teens has been announced as one of the headliners for Mighty Hoopla's 2025 line-up! The group, made up of Dhani Lennevald, Sara Lumholdt, Marie Serneholt, and Amit Paul, has certainly changed since their early days of fame. Back in 1998, they first came together as an Abba tribute band and quickly became sensations in the pop world.
Their debut album, The Abba Generation, was released in 1999 and featured covers of iconic Abba songs like Mamma Mia and Dancing Queen. But it was their second studio album that really put them on the map, with original tracks like Upside Down, which became a smash hit in countries all over the world. And now, more than 20 years later, they'll be bringing back fan favorites like Halfway Around the World and Sugar Rush at Mighty Hoopla next year.
The festival, taking place in London, has already confirmed a star-studded line-up, including Ciara, Kesha, Pixie Lott, and Eurovision winner Loreen. But fans are especially excited to see A*Teens back on stage, looking all grown up compared to their younger selves from 20 years ago. In a recent interview with Vice, Dhani reminisced about their early days of fame, saying, "We were just kids who loved singing and dancing. Sometimes we would stop and just be like, 'I can't believe this is happening for us.' It was such a beautiful and proud moment in my life."
But fame came quickly for the group, and they were surprised to learn that even Britney Spears was a fan. After releasing their Greatest Hits album in 2004, they announced they would be taking a break from the band to pursue solo projects. However, they have always remained on good terms and have never had any major conflicts. As Dhani explained, "We all felt like we wanted to try something new. It was like growing out of a shirt that doesn't fit as well anymore."
When asked about the possibility of a reunion, Dhani admitted that it would have to be for a good cause, saying, "Maybe if it was for some incredible charity thing, otherwise I don't see the point of it. I wouldn't do it for money." But he also made it clear that there was no bad blood between the members, stating, "We didn't fall out. We're just all living different lives."
Since their A*Teens days, the members have gone on to pursue different paths. Marie, now a mother to twin boys, released a single and debut album and even competed in the Melodifestivalen song contest in 2012. She also appeared as a judge on a version of The X Factor later that year and finished as the runner-up on Let's Dance in 2015. Dhani has worked as a model and music producer since releasing his first solo song in 2004.
Sara, on the other hand, has become a champion pole dancer and released a cover of Olivia Newton John's Physical, as well as working with Swedish producers and songwriters. She also hosted Sweden's X Factor spin-off, Xtra Factor, in 2012. As for Amit, he took a break from the limelight after A*Teens to focus on a career in business but did release a solo album in 2008 titled Songs In a Key Of Mine.
Despite their individual pursuits, the band did reunite earlier this year in honor of their 25th anniversary, taking the stage at Melodifestivalen. Who knows what the future holds for A*Teens, but for now, fans are just happy to see them back together and performing again. As the saying goes, once a fan, always a fan.
