In the early hours of the morning, a 50-year-old man caused quite a stir at a construction site in Melbourne when he climbed up onto a crane and refused to come down. Police were quickly alerted and arrived on the scene to negotiate with the man who had been perched atop the crane since 1:45am on High Street in Thomastown.
The incident was first reported to emergency services as a fire at the construction site. Fire crews responded promptly and were able to extinguish the blaze inside one of the buildings. However, upon further investigation, police discovered that the fire was intentionally set by the man on the crane.
As officers continued to negotiate with the man, they confirmed that there were no significant damages to the building. After several hours of intense discussions, the man finally agreed to come down from the crane just after 8am. Thankfully, there were no major injuries reported, and the man was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in an unrelated incident.
The 50-year-old Thomastown man will be interviewed by police at a later date to determine the reason behind his actions.
