The beautiful city of Bhubaneswar was abuzz with excitement as the Odisha Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, extended a warm invitation to investors to take part in the state's "port-led" economic transformation. He proudly proclaimed that Odisha is quickly becoming a key player in India's eastern maritime resurgence. The Chief Minister made these remarks during his attendance at the India Maritime Week 2025 event in Mumbai, where he was joined by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In his speech, Majhi emphasized the state's commitment to developing a robust port-based economy and transforming its ports into catalysts for trade, industry, and employment. He shared his vision for driving India's growth over the next 25 years. The event witnessed the signing of seven MoUs worth Rs 50,000 crore, including a proposal for the development of an all-weather Satellite Major Port at Bahuda Muhana and the establishment of the National Mega Ship Building Cluster.
The CMO released a statement quoting Majhi, "Odisha is committed to building a strong port-led and port-based economy and will transform its ports into engines of trade, industry, and employment, driving India's growth journey for the next 25 years." The event, hosted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and organized by the Indian Ports Association, brought together leaders from over 100 countries, including policymakers, industry experts, innovators, and investors. They all came together to deliberate on the future of the global maritime sector and India's growing leadership within it.
Majhi took this opportunity to interact with prominent industry representatives from the port and blue economy sectors. He extended an invitation to them to explore investment opportunities and take advantage of Odisha's rapidly developing maritime and coastal ecosystem. The Chief Minister also highlighted the strategic position of Odisha as India's emerging maritime hub on the eastern coast. He proudly stated, "With ports like Paradip, Dhamra, Gopalpur, and upcoming ports at Astaranga, Jatadhari Muhan, Subarnarekha, and Bahuda, we are expanding our total port handling capacity to 500 million tonnes annually by 2047, supported by three major ship anchor points."
Majhi went on to explain that the Bahuda Port, with an investment of Rs 21,500 crore, along with the Puri Cruise Terminal and a shipbuilding and repair cluster worth Rs 24,700 crore, will redefine Odisha's coastal economy and global trade linkages. He also highlighted key initiatives such as the development of 14 non-major ports and two transformational projects, the Bahuda Port and the Shipbuilding Cluster at Mahanadi Mouth.
During the special Odisha session, Majhi spoke about the state's vast coastline and its strategic location, which makes it the gateway to the East and a natural hub for maritime trade. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Odisha Pavilion at Maritime Week 2025, organized at NESCO Grounds, Mumbai. It was a proud moment for Odisha to showcase its potential and achievements in the maritime sector. Indeed, Odisha is on its way to becoming a leading player in India's economic growth story.
