The government of Odisha has recently taken a step towards providing affordable housing to its citizens. According to an official statement released on Wednesday, all civic bodies in the state have been instructed to begin accepting applications for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0. This initiative falls under the Odisha Urban Housing Mission, which is a part of the Housing & Urban Development Department.
In order to facilitate a smooth application process for eligible beneficiaries, the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been advised to set up helpdesks at their offices, conduct ward-wise camps, and work together with common service centres to assist applicants. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has already kickstarted this process by organizing a camp in Gadakana.
It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Gadakana on his 74th birthday on September 17 earlier this year. During his visit, he interacted with the beneficiaries of PMAY and took note of their living conditions. Following this, Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra advised that Gadakana be developed as a model area.
This year in August, the Centre approved the PMAY 2.0 with a goal to construct 1 crore houses for urban poor and middle-class families in the next five years. This ambitious project will require an investment of Rs 10 lakh crore, with a government subsidy of Rs 2.30 lakh crore. It is a significant step towards providing housing for all and improving the standard of living for citizens.
