Odisha government has advised collectors to be ready for potential floods.
The state government of Odisha has issued a notice to all district collectors and municipal commissioners, urging them to be prepared for potential floods during the upcoming monsoon season. Special Relief Commissioner, Satyabrata Sahu, sent a letter to the officials on Monday, informing them of the Indian Meteorological Department's prediction of heavy rainfall from June 26 onwards.

Sahu emphasized the need for immediate action, as the intense rainfall may lead to flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides in various areas. He urged the officials to stay at their headquarters and be deployed strategically in locations that are prone to such disasters. With the possibility of low-lying urban areas experiencing waterlogging and submerged roads, the SRC directed the urban local bodies to keep the drains and stormwater channels clear and to have enough dewatering pumps on standby.

In the event of heavy rain, the movement of vehicles on flooded roads should be regulated and residents in low-lying areas advised to temporarily relocate to safer locations. The SRC also stressed the importance of pre-positioning water pumps and generators in areas that are susceptible to waterlogging. He further directed for the supervision of weak spots in river and canal embankments and for flood-fighting materials to be readily available.

According to the IMD bulletin, districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Koraput should expect heavy rainfall on June 26. Thunderstorms and lightning may also occur in some areas of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts on Wednesday.

The SRC advised all officials to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of citizens and minimize the impact of the monsoon season. As always, the government is closely monitoring the situation and ready to provide assistance wherever needed. Let us all work together to combat the potential disasters and keep our state safe.
