Nike has taken a powerful step in celebrating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with the release of its fourth annual Yardrunners 4.0 Class. Led by Howard alumni Arinze Emeagwali and Richard Palmer, the campaign consists of 2023 talent from nine different HBCUs: Bowie State University, Florida A&M, Hampton University, Howard University, North Carolina A&T, Prairie View A&M, Southern University, Tennessee State University, and Winston-Salem State University.
This year's Class is made up of nine inspiring figures that are breaking barriers in their respective industries, such as Robert Covington, Cameron Lide, Jawaun Daniels, Foggie Raw, Javicia Leslie, Danielle Stamper, Melanie Mitchell, Lady London, and Kayla White. Covington, a professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Clippers and Tennessee State University graduate, shared his excitement for the collaboration with Nike in an Instagram Story this Thursday, saying, “Said I was up to something special. I’m excited to be apart of the YR family. HBCU legends.”
Along with the Yardrunners 4.0 Class, Nike has also released clothing apparel honoring the different institutions and will soon be offering its popular Terminator High collection, which is complete with HBCU-inspired sneakers. This year, the company has added five new colors to the ensemble, gleaning inspiration from Morehouse College, Spelman College, Tuskegee University, Tennessee State University, and Alabama A&M University.
It's clear that Nike is dedicated to elevating and empowering HBCUs and their communities, and it will be exciting to see what else the company has in store for future campaigns. Be sure to keep an eye out for any new releases and show your support for HBCUs.
