On July 24th, the Newark Central Planning Board granted their approval for Wu-Tang Clan Rapper Raekwon The Chef to open a dual cannabis dispensary and consumption lounge. This was a surprise to many as the board had refused to endorse the application earlier in the year.
The lounge, called Hashstoria, is being financially supported by Raekwon and is located in Newark, New Jersey’s Four Corners Historic District. The building, which dates back to the 1900s, is being renovated to include a new brick exterior with unique windows to showcase artwork from the community.
Rachael Grochowski, principal at Montclair-based RHG Architecture+Design, is involved in the project and spoke of her excitement. She emphasized the importance of the design for it to be successful, noting that it should offer a “sophisticated, inclusive, and enjoyable experience” for both experienced cannabis enthusiasts and the cannabis-curious.
Grochowski also made sure to mention the social justice, expungement, mental health, and creativity that this project will bring to the Newark community. The Hashstoria project is a collaboration of many iconic figures, including Raekwon, civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers, and radio, tv personality and mental health advocate Charlamagne tha God.
When completed, the Hashstoria dual cannabis dispensary and consumption lounge will be a wonderful addition to the Newark community. Not only will it bring forward a space that respects Newark’s heritage, but it will also be a beacon of social justice, expungement, mental health, and creativity.
