Many fans of The Witcher 3 have been eagerly awaiting news about a possible new DLC, and it seems that the rumors may finally be confirmed. Multiple sources have come forward to support the idea of a new expansion, which is said to include an entirely new region to explore.
Speculation about a new DLC for The Witcher 3 has been circulating since last June, but it wasn't until last month that Polish analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski added fuel to the fire with his comments. While it may seem strange for a game to receive new DLC almost a decade after its last expansion, this new content is said to serve as a bridge leading into the highly anticipated The Witcher 4, expected to launch in 2027.
Initially, it was believed that this DLC would be smaller in scale than previous expansions, but a recent leak has suggested otherwise. According to IGN Poland, a reliable insider has tipped them off about the new content, claiming that it will feature an entirely new region not seen in the original game. This information has been known to the outlet for some time, but they chose not to report on it until now due to the lack of multiple sources.
In light of Chrzanowski's comments, however, IGN Poland has decided to share what they know about the DLC, including CD Projekt's interest in exploring the desert region of Zerrikania. While there are references to Zerrikania in The Witcher 3, it has been several years since this information was shared, so it's possible that plans may have changed. This is especially likely since The Witcher 4 is already confirmed to feature the snowy region of Kovir, making the possibility of a desert region seem unlikely.
That being said, in a 2024 Easy Allies interview, CD Projekt did mention that The Witcher 4 will feature multiple regions, suggesting that Kovir won't be the only location players will get to explore. This new DLC certainly seems like it will be more substantial than initially thought, and Polish website PPE has also backed up its existence, claiming that The Witcher 3 will be receiving a major content update.
So why exactly is this DLC being made? According to Chrzanowski, it's essentially so that CD Projekt's upper management can receive an extra bonus. In an interview with Eurogamer, Chrzanowski mentioned an 'incentive programme' that awards key employees additional shares if certain financial targets are met. With only five quarters remaining, the programme is currently 700 million złoty short, which implies that the DLC will need to be a significant financial success.
This only adds further credibility to the belief that this new DLC will be far more substantial than a free update, which wouldn't help the company meet their financial targets or benefit the higher-ups. And in even more exciting news for fans, The Witcher 3 is also set to receive mod support this year.
