During his campaign for the title of North Carolina's first Black governor, Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson made controversial statements regarding the transgender community and their use of public restrooms. He brought up the now-repealed HB2 or "Bathroom Bill" and suggested that those who identify as male should be arrested for using women's restrooms. However, he has now taken a different stance and proposed that they should find a corner outside to relieve themselves. "We're going to defend women in this state," he declared at a rally in Cary.
Robinson's stance on this issue was also evident in another speech he gave in Greenville, where he urged those who are "confused" about their gender to find a private place outdoors to use the restroom. "We're not going to tear society down because of this," he emphasized. The controversial House Bill 2 was first passed in 2016 under the administration of former GOP Governor Pat McCrory. This bill received nationwide backlash as it required transgender individuals to use public restrooms that aligned with the gender on their birth certificate. As a result, North Carolina missed out on numerous opportunities to generate revenue for the state, such as PayPal's decision to cancel plans for establishing a headquarters in Charlotte. The NBA also moved their All-Star weekend from the city in protest of the bill.
Robinson's views on key issues have put him at odds with his competitors, even within his own party. His opponent in the gubernatorial race, Bill Graham, expressed his concerns about Robinson's candidacy through a spokesperson. "Mark Robinson will lose and hurt all GOP candidates if he is the nominee," said Alex Baltzegar. "His comments about the Holocaust being hogwash, along with his demeaning comments about women, will harm the chances of the GOP regaining the White House and the governorship here in North Carolina."
Fellow Republican candidate and State Treasurer Dale Folwell has also been critical of Robinson's derogatory comments towards various groups. He stated, "He is a prime example of someone trying to rise to power by spreading hate." Robinson's controversial remarks have targeted women as well, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama. In regards to abortion, which Robinson strongly opposes, he once referred to Harris as a "leftist idiot" for opposing the confirmation of pro-life Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. "Kamala Harris is a leftist idiot who is afraid that the right to terminate pregnancies will be threatened if Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed," he stated. "She is part of the out-of-touch wing of the Democratic Party and should stop advocating for abortion and focus on fixing the problems in her own state of California."
