Munawar Faruqui faces legal issues for supposed comments on web series.
The world of comedy and independent content creation in India's booming digital economy is currently facing some challenges. The recent uproar over comedian Samay Raina's show 'India's Got Latent' has now been followed by another controversy surrounding comedian Munawar Faruqui and his streaming show.

Advocate Amita Sachdeva took to social media, specifically X (formerly known as Twitter), on Sunday to share that she has officially filed a complaint against Munawar Faruqui. She accused him of making offensive remarks on his OTT show 'Hafta Wasooli'. In her tweet, she called him a "habitual offender" and claimed that his comments on the show have insulted multiple religions.

Amita wrote, "I have officially filed a complaint against Munawar Faruqui, a habitual offender, for his show 'Hafta Wasooli' streamed on @JioHotstar. I am requesting an FIR to be filed under BNS Sections 196, 299, and 353, along with the IT Act and other relevant Sections for promoting vulgarity, insulting multiple religions, and violating cultural values, as well as polluting young minds and society."

She also mentioned that she has sent the complaint via email and will physically submit it and speed-post it on Monday. If no action is taken, she plans to approach the court to ensure justice prevails. Using hashtags such as #MunawarFaruqui, #LegalAction, and #ProtectOurCulture, Amita shared her determination to take action against the comedian.

This is not the first time Munawar has been in trouble with the law. On January 1, 2021, he performed a stand-up show at Munro Cafe in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which was interrupted by Eklavya Singh Gaur, son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur. Gaur accused Munawar of making derogatory jokes about Hindu deities and India's Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah.

The next day, Munawar was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Police in the middle of his performance. He was charged with hate speech, despite the lack of evidence against him. His arrest was widely criticized for infringing on a comedian's freedom of speech.
