Mumbai Police's Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) recently busted an interstate gang of Medical Representatives from pharmaceutical companies responsible for the illegal sale of codeine-based cough syrup and other restricted prescription drugs. The ANC seized contraband drugs worth ₹28,27,500 and cash worth ₹3,50,000 in the special drive.
The ANC Azad Maidan team had arrested Umar Nadim near Times of India Bridge in Kandivali, Mumbai, with 100 CBCS bottles. Interrogation revealed that a pharma company, MR Kunjal Vishwakarma, had supplied the cough syrup. Subsequent raids on his Hanuman Nagar store in Kandivali led to the seizure of 4200 CBCS bottles and 900 Nitravet tablets stored illegally.
A third accused, Nishikant Dwivedi, was arrested for supplying sedatives to drug peddlers. He led the police to Mr. Sandeep Prajapati and Vinod Prajapati, who were in possession of forged rubber stamps and purchase orders for restricted drugs. The accused had made fake letters to illegally keep the drugs in their possession to sell in the black market.
The ANC Azad Maidan team had arrested five people, including a pharma MR, with 4970 CBCS bottles last December. Since then, a total of 34 accused have been arrested and 1865 kgs of drugs seized in the last two years. The police have also identified almost 18 pharma firms that will lose their licenses over low-quality drugs, following the death of several people due to cough syrup overdose.
