Madikeri, July 21: The incident of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law being attacked with a knife and robbed of a gold chain in Parambu village of Kondageri has shocked the district.

The stranger, who came in the afternoon on the pretext of asking for water, tried to commit this crime and escape. However, the accused was found by the locals and is now in police custody.

Munavar of Palibetta has been arrested. Saramma and Safana, who were attacked by him, are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital, and the accused has also been admitted to the district hospital for treatment.

What is the incident?

Around 9 am on Monday, when Safana and Saramma were at home, an unknown person came and knocked on the door. Munavar asked Saramma and Safana, who opened the door, ‘I am tired and want water’, and they gave it to him.

At 1.30 pm, he came to the house again and asked for water. When Safana went to fetch water, he attacked Saramma with a knife and tried to steal the gold chain from her neck. Immediately, hearing her screams, the accused attacked Safana, who came running, stole the chain and fled from there.

Immediately after learning about the matter, the residents of the area came and informed the police, made a video about the matter and shared it on local WhatsApp groups, and started a search to find the accused.

When local youths who saw the video searched around the village and inside the gardens, it came to light that the accused was hiding in the garden of Halugunda village

 The locals, who beat him up, later handed him over to the police.

Safana's husband Abdul Rehman is in Kerala for work as District Superintendent of Police K. After inspecting the spot, Ramarajan inquired about the health of the injured who are undergoing treatment at the district hospital and obtained information from the police about the incident.

 

The locals immediately took action and cooperated in arresting the accused. As soon as the information was received, a lockdown was imposed in the district and action was taken. A similar case had taken place in Madikeri in 2023. After investigation, the accused was sentenced to 10 years, and action will be taken to punish him according to the law, said S.P. Ramarajan.
