Men prefer direct approaches, while women prefer to feel like it was their idea.
When it comes to getting on the same page for a night of passion, initiating sex can make or break the mood. According to Lovehoney's survey of 1,500 adults, physical touch is the most popular initiation technique across the board, with gentle touches, caresses, and kisses being the most favored.
Romantic gestures were also highly ranked, showing that a candlelit dinner or bubble bath can go a long way. Women also enjoyed non-verbal cues, with 47% of them favoring this technique.
However, men preferred to be much more direct, with over half of them saying they liked direct communication. Some even like to spell out their intentions, with a flirty text being a surefire way to get the message across.
Elisabeth Neumann, head of user research at Lovehoney, believes these gender differences are a result of the messages we receive growing up. She says, “We have to acknowledge the influences of the messages that surround us when growing up, especially in sexual and gender socialization. Every one of us shapes our own sexual script, which is influenced by experiences, but also movies, role models, etc.”
Interestingly, the way people like sex to be initiated seems to change as we age. Those aged 18-24 and 25-34 prefer romantic gestures, while those aged 35-44 favor non-verbal cues. From 45-54 onwards, preferences switch to a slightly more direct approach, with physical touch being the most common.
However, at the end of the day, the best way to initiate sex is to figure out what turns you and your partner on. So why not use this article to get the conversation going and see where it takes you? Who knows, you might be surprised.
