Mark Stewart, member of punk band The Pop Group, passed away at 62; bandmates paid tribute to him.
We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Mark Stewart, the iconic post-punk and industrial hip-hop pioneer. The Pop Group frontman passed away in the early hours of Friday morning, according to a statement released by his label, Mute Records. He was 62.

A creative force of nature and an agitator in the best sense of the word, Stewart founded The Pop Group in 1977. The band released two albums - Y in 1979, and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? in 1980 - before splitting in 1981.

However, the group reunited in 2010 with Stewart, Gareth and Bruce for a series of live performances, the last of which was in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral for Coventry UK City of Culture 2021.

Tributes for the late musician have poured in from friends, family and fellow musicians, who shared their admiration for Stewart's spirit, creativity and commitment.
