Mantar urges to expedite disaster prevention work

Madikeri, Aug. 19: Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda urged Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda to complete the precautionary works undertaken in places where natural disasters have occurred without delay in the assembly session.

In 2018-19, many people lost their lives due to landslides in many places in Kodagu district. So far, disaster prevention has not been given much priority in the district. In 3 years, only Rs. 1.89 crore has been given for disaster prevention purposes. Now, 124 works have been undertaken on the recommendation of the Geological Survey of India, but it is not known on what basis they were taken. There is a proposal to provide a grant of Rs. 50 crore to Kodagu. Out of these, 84 works have been undertaken in the Madikeri area. The reply received from the minister is that 15 have been started. 69 works are still in the proposed stage. Since Kodagu is a sensitive area, more funds should be provided for disaster prevention. He said that precautions are needed and this work should be completed soon.

Replying to a question from the Mantar, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that long-term mitigation measures have been taken to prevent landslides. Possible hillocks, mud and landslide areas have been identified and work has been taken in this area at a cost of Rs. 500 crore. This is an attempt to provide a permanent solution. These places have been selected on the advice of technicians. This project is being implemented in places where the risk is high. I have instructed the District Collector to provide information about the sensitive areas and submit a report. Kodagu has also been provided with a grant of Rs. 50 crore, and more money will be given if needed. Disasters have been occurring in Kodagu since 2018. No long-term mitigation work has been done so far. This action has been taken for a permanent project. Expressing confidence that good results are expected, he informed that the goal is to complete the process in 2 months.
